At the end of the 12th century, Couches was divided into two distinct territories: Couches in the Kingdom and Couches in the Duchy. The village, situated in the Kingdom, developed under the protection of the King of France. The origins of this property date back to the treaty of 1186 granting the monks royal protection. At the end of the 12th century, Couches was divided into two distinct territories: Couches in the Kingdom and Couches in the Duchy. The village, situated in the Kingdom, developed under the protection of the King of France. The origins of this property date back to the treaty of 1186 granting the monks royal protection. They provided the King’s soldiers with a military fortification to oppose the lord of Couches Castle. The present building dates from the 15th century, whilst the glazed-tile roof is from the 19th century. The grounds feature trees that are nearly 500 years old. At the entrance, there are two small towers on either side of the gate. In the courtyard stands a large square tower. This is ‘La Tour Guérin’.
