In 18th-century Italy, four boors Lunardo, Maurizio, Simon and Canciano epitomise the different facets of authoritarianism. Brutal, stubborn, boorish, cads, they exercise tyranny within their family, where the women are recluses, forbidden to enjoy themselves as Carnival draws to a close. Two of the four boors, Lunardo and Maurizio, have decided to marry off their children. No one is to know... just their wives, who are kept obedient, even submissive.

But Margarita, Felice, Marina and the young bride, Lucietta, speak out and join forces to ensure that the young men can see each other before the contract is signed, provoking the wrath of the men. So how do you get away from misogyny without remaining in a constant state of confrontation? Felice, the play's central character, uses his speech and his attitude to respond to the issue of respect for one another, proposing a way towards a degree of reconciliation.

This play by Carlo Goldoni, with its epic and delightful dialogue, resonates with our times, when the emancipation of women around the world remains a struggle, as does that of an enlightened society on a global scale.
