We think we are looking at buildings… but often, it is they who teach us how to inhabit the world.
Why do some buildings soothe us, whilst others impress or bewilder us? At what point does a simple shelter truly become architecture?

This talk offers a sensory journey through the history of architecture, from the first great structures of antiquity to contemporary questions.

But rather than merely observing the buildings themselves, we shall view them through an unexpected lens: that of painters. For artists have often been able to reveal what plans and technical drawings do not show: the way in which space is experienced, felt and inhabited.

From ancient depictions to Renaissance perspectives, from modern urban scenes to contemporary visions, painting serves as a guide to understanding how architecture shapes our relationship with the world.

Combining art history, the history of forms and reflections on our own era, this talk invites you to discover how walls can convey ideas, express beliefs and tell the story of how each civilisation represents itself.
