For director Claudie Russo-Pelosi, adapting Maupassant’s *Bel-Ami* was not merely a matter of revisiting a literary classic. It was also about painting a portrait of a man and a society which, over time, have retained the same vices, with money, the press and politics as their pillars.
A penniless young man from the provinces, Georges Duroy becomes a writer for the newspaper *La Vie Française*, where he makes and breaks reputations. But behind this façade lies a man of boundless ambition, prepared to do anything to succeed.
By successively seducing influential women – all of whom bestow upon him the nickname ‘Bel-Ami’ – the opportunist manages to rise above his station.
A reflection of an era, a mirror of a society where appearances reign supreme, where one must know the rules of the game and know how to play them with intelligence, Bel-Ami is an anti-hero… or perhaps a hero we love to hate!
