Under the June sun of 1521, the peasants of Autun, proud of their connection to the land, exchange humorous remarks about the nobles who exploit them. In Barthélemy de Chasseneuz’s salon, a banquet brings together Guillaume Budé and other notables, and the hope of a visit from King Francis I revives the story of Autun’s great history.
The corridors of time then open onto Augustodunum in the 1st century: the people cheer on chariot races, mesmerising dances, harpastum and gladiatorial combat. Joy, bravery and celebration lift the whole city.
Beyond Saint-Lazare Cathedral, history darkens with the Middle Ages: fear, fires, death, and a fiery dance of death where wolves lurk.
Then, darkness gives way to hope… like a rebirth followed by the arrival of King Francis I in Autun in August 1521.
The city is buzzing with excitement as the king visits the remains of the ancient city of Augustodunum… Autun puts on a sumptuous tournament of chivalry and acrobatics in honour of Francis I. Moved by this glorious past, the king gives a poignant speech, full of hope…
This moment of glory is celebrated with a dazzling fireworks display that lights up the sky over Autun.
