On 1 October 1725, Hector-Bernard Pouffier, councillor and dean of the Dijon parliament, allocated part of his estate to his successor, in order to establish and maintain "academic conferences" and the distribution of prizes "for the knowledge most useful to the public". Three hundred years later, the Académie des sciences, arts et belles-lettres de Dijon is still going strong, and more vibrant than ever. It is one of the provincial academies to offer the richest programme of monthly papers, not to mention its annual prize, which once rewarded a certain Jean-Jacques Rousseau. We look at the life and work of such a prestigious learned society.
