Pygmalion was a sculptor from Cyprus who one day created a statue of the ideal woman. But Pygmalion was so strong and the work so successful that the artist fell madly in love with it. Thanks to the intervention of Aphrodite, the statue came to life and Pygmalion realised that the softness of the flesh surpassed the hardness and coldness of the marble.

It was this myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses that served as the basis for Jean-Philippe Rameau's composition of this perfect example of French opera (the musical kind, of course, not the cake with Mona Lisa biscuits and ganache), which was a runaway success from its premiere in 1748. And it is to this pinnacle of the Baroque repertoire that the Masques ensemble, led by Olivier Fortin, renowned for his very personal way of conducting an orchestra and choosing his performers with the greatest care, gives breath and life here - without the help of Aphrodite, but with soloists and instrumentalists who are far from marbled...
