On 14 January 1732, the City of Autun purchased the buildings that make up the present-day Hôtel Saint-Louis for 6,000 pounds, in order to set up stables for visiting troops. On 21 December 1744, after considerable repairs, it sold the buildings to the Midoux sisters to run "le logis de l'hôtel Saint-Louis". But before they became municipal property, these premises had been home to the Benedictine community of the Ladies of Saint-Julien. From Saint-Julien-sur-Dheune and Autun to Dijon, via Rougemont, this community of Benedictine nuns went through two centuries of tribulations in which important Burgundian families were involved. The history of the Dames de Saint-Julien also provides an insight into the lives of those who are rarely mentioned, the young women who became nuns by vocation or necessity in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
