  • The Journées romaines tell the story of science and technology, construction and the arts in the Roman Empire.
    Young and old alike will discover Gallo-Roman civilisation in all its diversity. Over 80 contributors from all over France will be on hand to share their passion for learning about the past and teaching about it in a fun, educational way.

    The Journées romaines tell the story of science and technology, construction and the arts in the Roman Empire.
    Young and old alike will discover Gallo-Roman civilisation in all its diversity. Over 80 contributors from all over France will be on hand to share their passion for learning about the past and teaching about it in a fun, educational way.

    For two days, come and meet the builders of the most emblematic monuments of antiquity, to the sound of stonemasons' hammers and carpenters, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a building site 2,000 years ago.
    You'll come across the potters and weavers of the time, the gardeners, the engineers, and also the famous legionnaires paving a road.

    Living tableaux:
    - The imperial army in full dress, with its marching and battle gear, on parade and in camp.
    - Firing demonstrations with the various pieces of Roman artillery.
    - The skills and secrets of the builders revealed to the public.
    - Dancers and musicians to relive the festivities of the period.

    Interactive workshops to discover cooking, clothing, make-up, coins, scientific knowledge, not forgetting craftsmen and merchants to track down...

    The programme in detail
    10am-6.30pm: building a Caupona / musical walk / Roman camp / Roman street
    10am-10.30am: tracing Roman roads (public participation possible *)
    10:45-11:30: Experimental archaeology and Roman artillery (Laurent Cabot)
    11:45-12:30: Legionary training (audience participation *)
    12:30-13:30: Lunch break.
    1.45pm-2.15pm: Ode to Minerva.
    2.30pm-2.45pm: Scorpion shooting and presentation of Roman artillery.
    3pm-3.30pm: Lecture (Autun Archaeological Department).
    3.45pm-4pm: demonstration of ancient Roman music and dance.
    4.45pm-5.45pm: legion manoeuvres.
