  • The fortifications built between 1870 and 1940 illustrate the excellence of military and civil engineers in protecting France.

  • Following the fighting of 1870-1871, General Séré de Rivières had to rethink the protection of France's borders. However, advances in artillery soon made the new fortifications irrelevant. Faced with the German threat, the forts that had already been built had to be converted. Feedback from the First World War then led to the construction of a vast and coherent set of fortifications: the Maginot Line.
