Lecture by Emmanuelle Galichet: "The nuclear reactors of tomorrow".

The talk looks at the importance of energy in the 21st century, highlighting its role in the global economy, geopolitics and climate. Nuclear energy can meet the challenges of replacing hydrocarbons in the economy and in everyday use, making it possible to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Focusing on the French case, the conference explores future developments in nuclear energy, through various solutions such as small-scale reactors (SMRs) and advanced modular reactors (AMRs). The former are often a miniaturisation of pressurised water reactors, while the latter are totally disruptive concepts, responding to criteria of sustainability of raw materials and reduced production of radioactive waste. They will be designed to produce electricity as well as industrial or residential heat. The concepts of fast neutron reactors, high temperature reactors and molten salt reactors will be presented.
