the Sonatæ honori XV. Sacronem Mÿsterionem by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber - Cycle of 15 sonatas for violin and continuo by the Académie Sainte-Cécile conducted by Philippe Couvert.
Born into a line of artists from Lyon, Philippe Couvert studied violin with the teacher Jean Lénert, and harmony and counterpoint at the Paris Conservatoire. A member of the European Community Youth Orchestra (Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Antal Dorati, Seiji Ozawa, Georg Solti, Yuri Symonov), he receives invaluable advice from Pierre Pénassou, cellist with the Quatuor Parrénin.
Philippe Couvert has been solo violin with La grande écurie & La chambre du Roy/Jean Claude Malgoire since 1986, and has been a guest with some of the finest ensembles playing on period instruments (Collegium vocale van Gent/Gustav Leonhardt, Hesperion XX/Jordi Savall, Il Seminario musicale/Gérard Lesne, La Petite bande/Sigiswald Kuijken). In 1988 he founded L'académie Sainte-Cécile, an instrumental ensemble which he leads in concert and on record all over Europe and the world. He has also appeared in recital (Bach's Sei Solo à Violino senza Basso) and as soloist (Beethoven concerto), serving Ars Nova and Subtilior and championing the composers of his generation.
Philippe Couvert regularly teaches masterclasses at the CRR in Lille, Perpignan and Reims, the Curso de Música Antiga in Rio de Janeiro, the Fondation Royaumont, the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique in Saintes, and the Zentrum für Telemann-Pflege und -Forschung in Magde-burg. His recognised specialisation has led to his participation in a number of landmark films: 'Dangerous Liaisons' (Stephen Frears), 'Tous les matins du monde' (Alain Corneau), 'Jefferson in Paris' (James Ivory) and 'Ridicule' (Patrice Leconte).
The Académie Sainte-Cécile is an instrumental ensemble of variable geometry, playing on historically informed instruments and occasionally expanding to orchestral numbers, always without a conductor, following in the footsteps of its historical models from the 17th and 18th centuries. He has been applauded on the most prestigious stages (al-Qāhi-ra, Ambronay/France3/Mezzo, Brugge, Brussels, Eszterháza Castle, Ferrara, Geneva, München, 'Folles journées' in Nantes, Reims Cathedral, Royaumont Abbey, Le Maillon theatre in Strasbourg, Château de Versailles) alone or in the company of the most renowned artists and vocal ensembles. Its members and close collaborators share their experience at an early music workshop held every summer in Alligny-en-Morvan (Burgundy).
