Bibracte museum

logo du label Aventure Mômes

Bibracte Museum stands on the slopes of Mount Beuvray.

In a very contemporary architectural setting, the permanent exhibits offer a fascinating account of Celtic civilisation through its Oppida (fortified towns) which were scattered all over Europe just over 2,000 years ago.

Archaeological objects loaned by French and foreign museums, and copies of remarkable items, are compared with the objects discovered at Bibracte.
Numerous models, audiovisual presentations, and reconstructions make the museum very attractive and enable you to get right to the heart of the everyday lives of our ancestors. You will thus discover the social organisation, arts and crafts, agriculture, trade, religion, art and culture of peoples who were much less barbaric than Caesar wanted us to believe...

A whole floor is devoted to the results of the excavations carried out since 1984 at the Bibracte site by archaeologists from all over Europe.

Rolin Museum

The Rolin museum is the birthplace of Nicolas Rolin (15th century) (Chancellor of the Dukes of Burgundy and founder of the Hospices de Beaune); it houses rich and varied collections.

  • The archaeological collections show the Gallo-Roman past of Autun: Mosaics of Greek authors, the mosaic of 'Bellerophon and the Chimera", parade helmets, bronzes ...
  • You can also admire works of the middle ages: Eve (12th century sculpture), Nativity of the master of Moulins (15th century painting), Virgin of Autun (15th century polychrome stone).
  • The Museum is also enriched by important legacies of paintings from the 17th to the 20th century (Brugel, Le Nain, Cibo, Vernet, Charlot, Denis, Dubuffet, Miro, Ubac, Alechinski...)

There is the 3D film "Revelation, the large portal of Autun" for you to see as well. This film reveals every detail of the last judgment tympanum of the Saint-Lazare Cathedral (12th century): it gives visitors the reading keys in order to understand the tympanum, its creation, its realisation, the characters and their roles. The visitor is plunged into a unique journey into the heart of the Saint-Lazare Cathedral.

Be careful !

The 3D film is visible in the new space : "Espace Gislebertus - Destination Autun"

The Jacques de La Comble Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum of Autun dates back to the early 19th century. The collections made up by the natural history society are currently the property of the city of Autun and are of exceptional quality.
The museum manages more than 800,000 samples:

  • Magnificent collection of birds, eggs and nests representing more than 10,000 specimens
  • Herbariums (300,000 boards)
  • Collections of insects, shells and many fossils and minerals (300,000 pieces) that retrace the geological history of the region
  • Fossiliferous specimens representing animals and plants that lived in our region 300 million years ago.

The Autun basin is a reference (stratotype) in the history of the earth for a period of the primary era. The fossils that are preserved in the museum collection are proof of this.
The "roads of energy" exhibition traces the history of an industrial sector: it is organized around the oil shale, allowing the production of shale oil, equivalent to the natural oil of coal and autunite, the first French uranium mineral.
