Rolin Museum

The Rolin museum is the birthplace of Nicolas Rolin (15th century) (Chancellor of the Dukes of Burgundy and founder of the Hospices de Beaune); it houses rich and varied collections.

  • The archaeological collections show the Gallo-Roman past of Autun: Mosaics of Greek authors, the mosaic of 'Bellerophon and the Chimera", parade helmets, bronzes ...
  • You can also admire works of the middle ages: Eve (12th century sculpture), Nativity of the master of Moulins (15th century painting), Virgin of Autun (15th century polychrome stone).
  • The Museum is also enriched by important legacies of paintings from the 17th to the 20th century (Brugel, Le Nain, Cibo, Vernet, Charlot, Denis, Dubuffet, Miro, Ubac, Alechinski...)

Temporary exhibition (from July 5th to December 31st):
Fantastic! Figures of the monster from antiquity to today.
The exhibition focuses on the supernatural beings we have filled the world since ancient times. Pegasus, Jellyfish, sirens ... the hybrid deities and magical creatures populate the beliefs of Antiquity with exuberance and come to register even in the most everyday objects ... Rare are the truly frightening figures, evoking then the fields of madness and chaos. With Christianity, the notion of Evil is embodied by the character of the devil and the ancient monsters are endowed with new meanings. Even today, these fantastic beings fascinate us and continue to bring a part of poetic imagination to our perception of the world.
