Gastronomy and local products
For budding lovers of fine food, Autun is the place for satisfaction! Apart from the AOC Charolais beef, cheese producers (mainly goat) and honey producers, Autun also has producers of foie gras and duck derivatives, homemade organic beer and jam producers.
A must during the fairs - March 1 and Saint-Ladre (1 September) enjoy a tête de veau with a gribiche or ravigote sauce. Here you have great restaurants with typical Burgundian dishes (beef bourguignon, poached eggs, coq au vin, Morvan cured ham ...) punctuates the stay for food lovers. Discover the gourmet addresses of Autun and come and taste regional cuisine, traditional cuisine or the cuisine from other regions of the world.
Very committed to upholding culinary traditions, some inns offer at the end of the afternoon "The Morvan Quatr'heures." This meal comes from a peasant tradition:, after a hard day we sit down at the table to take a break and to regain strength to keep going until supper time. On the menu: ham, locally produced rosette, bacon omelette, farmhouse cream cheese and a loaf of bread. Expect to be sated...
On the sweet side: Morvan hazelnuts, roasted and coated in an almond paste and baked will seduce the true gourmands. The Talleyrand coffee is also to be tested, 100% Arabica "quite full-bodied with a long lasting taste" the shop "Pause Café" (in the shopping area in Autun) roasts this mixture of coffee that is selected and blended by a hand crafted process based on a letter dated 26 December 1825 written by Maurice de Talleyrand from Marseille (he was amongst these different lives, the Bishop of Autun). It matches his famous definition of coffee: "Coffee should be black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel and sweet as love". To satisfy your taste buds accompany your tasting with the "Grain défendu" a confectionery made of Arabica coffee beans coated with chocolate.
The markets take place in the rooms of the City Hall and on the forecourt on:
- Wednesdays from 7 am to 1 pm: Food market
- Fridays from 7 am to 1 pm: large market
Please note that the shop keepers organise the "Grande braderie des commerçants" (a jumble sale) at the end of July.
Trade fairs and funfairs:
- 1st March
- The Saint-Ladre fair: 1st September
