Saint Émiland

Château d'Épiry

Having preserved its four round towers from medieval times, the castle of Epiry surprises by its location on the hillside, weakening its defense.

The presence in Epiry of a lord Lambertus D'Espirii is reported from 1110. Three centuries later, this stronghold is still defended by a dungeon that has disappeared. Its military character was reinforced by the construction, during the 13th or 14th century, of the four towers, pierced with defense openings, surrounded by moats and surrounded by curtain walls.

As early as the 15th century, a chapel, of a good size, was erected, nestled against the south-east tower: its vault, with its ogival cross in flamboyant gothic style, is surmounted by the Rabutin's arms. More later, the main building, framed by two north towers, was lit by mullioned windows, with an irregular layout.

The archaeological site of Bibracte

Whichever way you turn at Bibracte, you see archaeology!

In the late 2nd century BC, the Aeduan Gauls built a town on Mont Beuvray protected by a 7km rampart. This marked the birth of the oppidum of Bibracte, a political, religious and economic centre in a vast territory spanning the area between the Saône and Allier rivers.
Today, archaeological remains are coming to light in this protected natural environment sheltered by a remarkable forest, and a complete ancient town is being excavated by archaeologists and brought back to life, with its fortifications, monumental gates, public buildings and a central avenue passing through the various districts. Every year, teams from European universities carry out work on the site.

From June to September, you have the opportunity to watch archaeologists in action, discover their methods, and see artefacts being unearthed.

If you wish, a guide can introduce you to daily life in the Gallo-Roman town of Bibracte and the extensive research being carried out there.

Château de Sully

logo du label Aventure Mômes

"The most beautiful courtyard in the Kingdom" according to Roger de Bussy Rabutin, the Château de Sully is a true treasure of Burgundy. Originally a Roman base camp, Sully is now a Renaissance chateau with four corners towers and a chapel, a countyard and is surrounded by a moat. The domaine also features a pigeon house, an authentic washroom as well as an original icehouse and reconverted stable house. Furthermore, the Château de Sully is one of the rare chateaux still lived in all year round by its owner, the Duchess of Magenta and her two children.
Sully has been in the Mac Mahon family since the 18th century and was the birth place of Field Marshal Maurice de Mac Mahon, elected French President in 1873, the only French président born in Burgundy.
