Countertenor Andreas Scholl, a Festival regular since 1994, returns to his favourite repertoire with a performance of sacred works by the little-known Bohemian composer František Tuma, accompanied by the Czech Ensemble Baroque conducted by Roman Válek.
One of the most important creators of High Baroque, on the edge of Classicism, Tuma composed both instrumental and sacred music, drawing his roots from counterpoint and the Italian cantata.
This concert presents Tuma's output from the time he entered the service of Empress Elisabeth-Christine in Vienna in 1741.
Magnificent motets, a cantata and a sinfonia show the full range of his work, which served as a model for other Viennese composers such as Haydn and Mozart.
"Andreas Scholl's interest in restoring Tuma's works is to be welcomed. I am convinced that this will enable this great composer of monarchical Vienna to return to the world music spotlight", says Roman Válek, conductor of the Czech Ensemble Baroque and a specialist in this repertoire.
