Lectures Musicales "L'affaire Montcharmont"

The Montcharmont of Morvan... It's still a story that spills as much ink as it did blood, and more than a century and a half later, it's still going strong! The children told me, "It's a bit like a detective story... with traditional music to boot".

The idea was to give different voices, fictions, sources and testimonies - sometimes contradictory - to this tragic Morvan affair, which had a national impact in the 19th century.

We needed a balanced structure that would allow everyone to make up their own minds about the event and its profound contemporary resonances. It was important not only to paint a nuanced picture of Claude Montcharmont, his relationships and the village community of Saint Prix where the drama unfolded, but also to lighten the subject by punctuating it with the music played at the time... with a few playful twists on the repertoire.
