  • The American West: mythical cities, the splendour and shadow of natural spaces

The American West is a myth in our imagination: the myth of trappers, courageous adventurers in a hostile environment; the myth of cowboys and fantastic rides; the myth of the gold rush. These myths, abundantly maintained by the westerns that have invaded our screens, must not make us forget these cohorts of migrants whose thirst for conquest was unlimited, whatever the price to pay: their lives and those of the Indians.
The American West is also the reality of these infinite spaces of beauty, preserved in the vast natural parks (the parks have been selected for their link with the human history of the United States): in the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Tetons park, land of the trappers and the Cowboys; in Death Valley, land of the mineral seekers; on the Colorado plateau in Monument Valley, in the canyons of Mesa Verde and Chelly, domains of the Anasazi and the Navajos
The American West is also full of amazing cities: Salt Lake City, capital of the Mormons; Las Vegas, city of gambling; Jackson, city of the Cowboys; Flagstaff, city of the pioneers.
