Rites is a show that overturns the classical codes of the choral concert and turns the Ensemble's habits on their head. Covering a wide repertoire ranging from baroque aesthetics to contemporary atmospheres, this original programme takes us on a journey through cultures and traditions.
By exploring the various types of vocality of the Lithuanian, Finnish, English and French languages, Rites invites us to immerse ourselves in different styles of music (dances, harvest songs, ritual music, traditional folk music, sacred music, etc.) and writing (canons, double choirs, minimalism, free improvised forms, etc.). The eclectic repertoire chosen for this new show offers a fresh exploration of timbres and sonorities (nasality, diaphonic singing, sound effects, drones, breath, guttural sounds, play on harmonies and registers, body percussion, musical glasses, etc.). Already initiated in some of the previous programmes, the work of staging occupies a central place this time. Thanks to a close collaboration with choirmaster Loïc Pierre and a long period of experimentation with the choristers, Rites has now been fully staged and spatialised to offer the audience a unique, hypnotic, immersive and vibrant experience.
Covering a wide repertoire ranging from baroque aesthetics to contemporary atmospheres, this ground-breaking programme takes the audience on a journey through cultures and traditions. Veljo Tormis, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and Henry Purcell come together in a single arch, a continuum of pieces assembled, fused and united.
True to the construction of its programmes, Anima offers a show set in space, playing on the close relationship with the audience and the energy of the pieces to create strong contrasts and offer participants a novel, hypnotic, immersive and vibrant experience.
