In the 18th century, the wine merchants were born and prospered in Beaune. They bought up historic monuments with their fabulous underground passages. The bastion of the Oratory, the convent of the Visitandines and the old castle of Beaune became the property of the Maison Chanson, Patriarche and Bouchard Père et Fils respectively.
